Fantastic Costumes

The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit offer tons of amazing and unique costume ideas. Whether you're dressing up for Halloween, a convention, or just for fun, The Lord of the Rings is a great choice for a costume. You're sure to find a costume on this page that you like, or if you're more creative, watch the videos to find out how to make your own.

I've loved The Lord of the Rings since I read the books in high school. It was right at the time the movies came out, and it was fun to read the books just before hand, so they were fresh in my mind when I saw the movies. Their popularity has resurged with the release of The Hobbit trilogy, and with the new movies comes a whole new wave of costume ideas.

Last year, I had the chance to go on a Lord of the Rings tour in New Zealand. People on the tour often dress up in costumes on the final night. The tour company also hosts premiere tours and parties for the movies where the costumes can get pretty elaborate. It's a lot of fun for everyone. Try hosting your own premiere party or a movie marathon and have everyone dress up in a Lord of the Rings or Hobbit costume.

Legolas Costumes

Legolas is one of the most popular characters in the Lord of the Rings films, and so Legolas costumes are one of the most popular choices for Halloween or conventions! He was definitely my favorite character when the movies first came out, though I have a lot of favorites now. An esteemed elf warrior and prince, he's a great character to dress up as.

Elf Ears

Whether you're dressing up as Legolas, Arwen, Galadriel, or another elf, you're going to need elf ears! They are the defining physical characteristic of elves (besides their grace and beauty) and no elf costume is complete without them.

Make your own Elf Ears

If you're trying to save a bit of money, try making your own elf ears. This videos explains how to make elf ears using just scotch tape and a bit of regular liquid and powder makeup.

Bilbo Costumes

With the Hobbit in theaters last year, plus the next two installments coming, Hobbit costumes are gaining in popularity. Bilbo has a very small part in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but he is the main focus of The Hobbit (hence the title of the movies!). Bilbo's clothes and appearance are much more defined, allowing for some fantastic costume opportunities.

Hobbit Feet

Whether you're planning to dress up as Bilbo, Frodo, or any hobbit, you need hobbit feet! Hobbits walk everywhere, so their large feet are perfect for getting around hard terrain quickly and quietly. You really shouldn't wear shoes if you're going to dress up as a hobbit, so hobbit feet are a perfect supplement.

Arwen Costumes

Arwen is one of the few female characters in Lord of the Rings. On the one hand, this can create limited choices for women who want to dress up, but on the other hand, Arwen as some amazing clothes. There are lots of beautiful Arwen costumes available that can make you feel like a true elf princess. Make sure to get the Evenstar pendant to make it truly authentic, since it symbolizes her immortality. It is also a symbol of her love for Aragorn when she gives it to him, therefore choosing a mortal life.

Lord of the Rings Characters

Are you trying to decide who you want to dress up as? The problem is, there's so many choices!

Bilbo is a current favorite, since he is the focus of the new movies. In many ways, he's a typical hobbit, wanting nothing more than to eat constantly and to wander through the Shire. But, he has a streak of his Took ancestry running through his blood and has a bit of a sense of adventure because of it. He has trouble living up to his Took name, but tries nonetheless.

Legolas was a favorite when the original movies were released, and is still popular today. He is the elf prince of Mirkwood and is a fierce warrior. Bitter towards dwarfs for all of his life, he has a hard time accepting Gimli as part of the fellowship. However, the two eventually become inseparable friends. A big part of any Legolas costume is his bow and arrow, which he uses with deadly precision.

Arwen is the most popular for women. There are only three significant female characters in the movies: Arwen, Galadriel, and Eowyn. Arwen being the elf princess tends to be the first choice. Plus, the fact that she is Aragorn's love interest doesn't hurt...
